Kernel smut / Grain smut / Covered smut (Sphacelotheca sorghi)
Symptoms
- The symptoms are seen in the ear head.
- Majority of the individual grains are replaced by smut sori.
- Sori are covered with a creamy tough skin material and remain intact without rupturing early.
- The incidence is seen more in ratoon crops.
Management
- Collect the smutted earheads in cloth bags and destroy by dipping in boiling water.
- Avoid ratoon cultivation.
