Mango (Mangifera indica)
Mango malformation: Fusarium moliliforme var. subglutinans
Symptoms
- Malformation is widely prevalent in northern India.
- The malformed panicles remain unproductive and are characterised by a compact mass of male flowers, greenish in colour and stunted in growth.
Management
- Pruning of shoots bearing malformed panicles.
- Deblossoming of early emerged / infested panicles.
- Incidence reduced by spraying 100-200ppm NAA during October.
- Pruning of diseased parts along the basal 15-20 cm apparently healthy portions.
Black tip
Symptoms
- This disease is also known as necrosis or chimney disease.
- Affected fruit become unmarketable.
- Development of small etiolated area at the distal end of fruit – gradually spreads and turns black and covers tip completely.
Management
- Borax 0.6% - before flowering, during flowering, after fruit set.
Spongy tissue
Symptoms
- Healthy and affected fruit cannot be differentiated from their external appearance during unripe and ripe stages.
- Affected tissues visible only when cut open.
- Affected pulp is differentiated from healthy one by its pale yellow colour soft or spongy nature, with or without air pockets and acidic taste.
- Development of white corky tissue in mesocarp of maturing and ripening fruits.
Management
- Early picking of fruits at 85 % maturity – reduces incidence.
- Store at 10-15 ͦ C for 10-18 hrs.
