Mango malformation: Fusarium moliliforme var. subglutinans

Symptoms

  • Malformation is widely prevalent in northern India.
  • The malformed panicles remain unproductive and are characterised by a compact mass of male flowers, greenish in colour and stunted in growth.

Management

  • Pruning of shoots bearing malformed panicles.
  • Deblossoming of early emerged / infested panicles.
  • Incidence reduced by spraying 100-200ppm NAA during October.
  • Pruning of diseased parts along the basal 15-20 cm apparently healthy portions.

Black tip

Symptoms

  • This disease is also known as necrosis or chimney disease.
  • Affected fruit become unmarketable.
  • Development of small etiolated area at the distal end of fruit – gradually spreads and turns black and covers tip completely.

Management

  • Borax 0.6% - before flowering, during flowering, after fruit set.

Spongy tissue

Symptoms

  • Healthy and affected fruit cannot be differentiated from their external appearance during unripe and ripe stages.
  • Affected tissues visible only when cut open.
  • Affected pulp is differentiated from healthy one by its pale yellow colour soft or spongy nature, with or without air pockets and acidic taste.
  • Development of white corky tissue in mesocarp of maturing and ripening fruits.

Management

  • Early picking of fruits at 85 % maturity – reduces incidence.
  • Store at 10-15 ͦ C for 10-18 hrs.
