Panama wilt or Fusarim wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense)

Symptoms

  • Yellowing of lower leaves, including leaf blades and petioles.
  • Yellowish to reddish streaks are noted towards the rhizome
  • Dwarfing and stunting of young and old plants.
  • Reddish vascular strands appear as yellow, red or brown dots and streaks and are deeply stained to form a reddish brown ring when an affected rhizome is cut transversely.
  • Infected pseudostem and rhizome emits a characteristic foul odour and the plant dies.

Management

  • Grow resistant varieties like Giant Cavendish, Palayankodan, Robusta, Nendran etc.
  • Avoid growing highly susceptible varieties like Grosmicheal.
  • Use of disease-free suckers, tissue culture seedlings and resistant cultivars are recommended.
  • Remove & destroy disease infected suckers & incorporate 1 kg lime into the pits
