Rhizome Weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus)

Symptoms

  • Female adult puncture healthy rhizome and insert eggs through it, grubs tunnel into the rhizome an dfeed on it resulting in stunting of rhizome
  • Leaves turn yellow, wither and die prematurely.
  • Leaves become smaller in size
  • Reduction in bunch size
  • In the final stage, the spindle leaves wilt. The rhizome rots. Holes and black debris can be seen inside.

Management

  • Use planting material free of weevils.
  • Deep plough the land to expose the inner soil layer to sun.
  • Sucker treatment with Pseudomonas flurescens (20 gram/litre)
  • Apply neemcake @ 1 kg/plant at the time of planting.
