Stem rot (Sclerotium rolfsii)
Symptoms
- Branches close to the plant's base turn yellow and wilt.
- White fungal growth appears near the soil around the affected stem.
- Severely affected pods become covered in white fungal growth and white to brown sclerotia, and eventually rot.
- In some instances, seeds from diseased pods exhibit a characteristic bluish-gray discoloration termed 'blue damage'.
Management
- Deep ploughing, sanitation of field
- Control of moisture and soil solarization helps in controlling stem rot.
- Crop rotation with cotton, wheat, onion and garlic is an effective means of control.
- Treat seeds with Trichoderma viride / T. harzianum formulation (20 gram/ kg of seed).
- Apply Neem cake @ 150 kg / ha preferably fortified with Trichoderma viride / Trichoderma harzianum to the soil. Drench Trichoderma viride / Trichoderma harzianum (20 g/litre of water) in the soil.
