Fruit rot or cottony leak (Phythium aphanidermatum)

Symptoms

  • Fruits in intimate contact with soil is affected
  • The fungus attacks through wounds on the fruits.
  • Luxuriant cottony white growth of the fungus can be seen on the infected fruits.
  • Skin of the fruit shows soft, dark green, water soaked lesions
  • Interior tissue become watery and soft and decaying matter emits a bad odour

Management

  • Apply mulch on the soil to avoid direct contact of fruits with soil.
  • Remove and destroy all rotted fruits.
  • Prophylatic soil application of Pseudomonas fluorescens or Trichoderma spp. (20 g/litre of water) will reduce the disease incidence.
