Fruit rot or cottony leak (Phythium aphanidermatum)
Symptoms
- Fruits in intimate contact with soil is affected
- The fungus attacks through wounds on the fruits.
- Luxuriant cottony white growth of the fungus can be seen on the infected fruits.
- Skin of the fruit shows soft, dark green, water soaked lesions
- Interior tissue become watery and soft and decaying matter emits a bad odour
Management
- Apply mulch on the soil to avoid direct contact of fruits with soil.
- Remove and destroy all rotted fruits.
- Prophylatic soil application of Pseudomonas fluorescens or Trichoderma spp. (20 g/litre of water) will reduce the disease incidence.
