Downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis )

Symptoms

  • The primary symptoms are pale yellow angular spots on the upper surface of the leaves.
  • White/ yellow/ orange fungal growth appears on the lower surface of the leaves, under conditions of high humidity.
  • The disease spreads rapidly killing the plant quickly through rapid drying of leaves and defoliation.
  • It is prevalent in areas of high humidity, especially when summer rains occur regularly.

Management

  • Destruction of plant debris of previous crop.
  • Maintain proper plant density.
  • Remove and destroy severely infected and dried leaves.
  • Use tolerant varieties
  • Avoid overhead irrigation, water plants from base.
