Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)
Cucumber mosaic disease (Cucumber mosaic virus)
Symptoms
- The common symptoms include irregular light and dark green or yellow patches or streaks on the leaf and floral parts.
- The symptoms are mainly seen on younger leaves.
- The affected leaves become stunted, curled, or wrinkled. And the veins may be lighter than normal or banded with dark green or yellow discoloration.
- Plants are often dwarfed, with fruit and flowers fewer than usual, deformed, and stunted.
- New growth is cupped downward, and leaves are severely mottled with alternating light green and dark green patches.
- Plants are stunted, and fruits are covered with bumpy protrusions. Severely affected fruit may be almost entirely white.
Management
- Control of the virus is largely dependent on the control of the aphid vectors.
- Use resistant varieties.
- Reflective mulches like White plastic mulch can deter aphid feeding
- Rouge out the affected plants.
- Applying sticky traps or covering the ground with an aphid deterrent material like aluminium foil boards can help in reducing the disease incidence.
- Apply neem cake in the planting pits.
