Sett rot (Ceratocytis paradoxa)
Symptoms
- When diseased setts are planted, they might rot before sprouting, or the shoots could die after growing to about 6-12 inches tall.
- The soil-borne fungus enters through the cut ends, causing pink or reddish discoloration near the cuts.
- As the setts dry up, the reddish color turns black, with many black fungal spores sticking to them.
- Infected shoots that survive are severely stunted and yellowish.
- Eventually, the leaves may dry up and the shoots wilt. If you examine the affected shoots and setts, you'll notice a red discoloration in the center of the shoots and rot in the sett. When opened, the affected setts have a pineapple-like smell.
Management
- Healthy setts should be obtained from disease free fields.
- Ensure Proper drainage and planting of setts in 1-2 cm depth.
- Use long setts having 3-4 nodes/buds.
- Dipping the setts in 40 ppm of boron or manganese.
