Cotton (Gossypium sp.)

Anthracnose (Colletotricum gossypium)

Symptoms

  • The disease affects all parts of the plant at any stage of growth.
  • Small spots appear on the cotyledons and primary leaves of seedlings, which can be reddish or light in color.
  • Stems are often weakened by the disease when attacked through wounds.
  • Bolls at any stage can be affected, with the fungus invading both the lint and seeds.
  • Lint turns yellow or brown and clumps together.
  • Infected bolls develop small, water-soaked, circular, slightly sunken, reddish-brown spots.
  • Severely affected seeds are poorly developed, and typically fail to germinate.

Management

  • Avoid water logging.
  • Destroy infected plant debris.
