Panama wilt or Fusarim wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense)
Symptoms
- Yellowing of lower leaves, including leaf blades and petioles.
- Yellowish to reddish streaks are noted towards the rhizome
- Dwarfing and stunting of young and old plants.
- Reddish vascular strands appear as yellow, red or brown dots and streaks and are deeply stained to form a reddish brown ring when an affected rhizome is cut transversely.
- Infected pseudostem and rhizome emits a characteristic foul odour and the plant dies.
Management
- Grow resistant varieties like Giant Cavendish, Palayankodan, Robusta, Nendran etc.
- Avoid growing highly susceptible varieties like Grosmicheal.
- Use of disease-free suckers, tissue culture seedlings and resistant cultivars are recommended.
- Remove & destroy disease infected suckers & incorporate 1 kg lime into the pits
