Pseudostem Borer (Odoiporus longicollis)

Symptoms

  • Grubs emerging out feed extensively on the pseudostem.
  • Colourless jelly like plant sap oozes out from boreholes.
  • Chewed up material will also be pushed out through the holes.
  • Leaves turn yellow, dry up and finally, the plant collapses.
  • The weevil is either reddish brown or black.

Management

  • Regularly remove dried hanging leaves of the plant.
  • Place 50 gram neem cake powder in the leaf axils on the 5th and 7th month.
  • Uproot severely affected plants
  • Open cut side of the above pseudostem trap can be sprayed with solution of Beauveria bassiana or Metarhizium anisopliae (5 gram /litre).
