Arecanut (Areca catechu)

Bud Rot (Phytophthora arecae; P. meadii)

Symptoms

  • Initial symptom is the characteristic change of spindle leaf colour from green to yellow and then brownish.
  • The leaves rot and the growing bud rots causing death of the palm.
  • The affected young leaf whorl can be easily pulled off.

Management

  • Remove and destroy affected spindle and leaves.
  • In early stages of infection, scoop out affected rotten tissues by making longitudinal side splits
  • Keeping sache of Metalaxyl + Mancozeb 80 WP or Fosetyl-Al at the base of the spindle leaf.
  • Drench the spindle leaf base and the base of the other leaves with 1% Bordeaux mixture or Potassium phosphonate 50 SC (4 ml / litre of water) or Metalaxyl + Mancozeb 80 WP (2 gram/litre of water) in 2 weeks interval especially during monsoon season. Stem injection or root feeding with 6 ml of Potassium phosphonate 50 SC and 5 ml of Tridemorph 80 EC in 100 ml of water
  • Apply Bordeaux paste on the exposed healthy tissues or drench crown with 1% Bordeaux mixture.
