Spear rot / Stem wet rot(Erwinia spp)
Symptoms
- Sudden death of the spear leaves including the young expanded fronds surrounding the spear
- Remaining fronts show yellowish discoloration and then rapidly wither and die
- Sometimes, the older leaves die first and the symptoms progress to younger leaves
- Affected palm will have a cavity of variable size filled with rotten fibrous mass.
- Rotting mass will be bright yellowish in color
- Occurrence of spear without yellowing is also noticed
Management
- Roguing of all affected palms
- Removal of infected portion
- Providing proper drainage
- Avoiding flood in the field
