Shoot/Capsule borer (Conogethes punctiferalis )

Symptoms

  • Serious problem to cardamom growers of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
  • At the early stage of the crop, the caterpillars of this yellow-coloured moth borer into the core of the aerial stem resulting in the death of central spindle, which appears as characteristic dead hearts.
  • At the time of flowering, when the caterpillars attack the panicles and spikes it may lead to flower shedding and drying up of the attacked portions.
  • At a later stage of the crop, the caterpillars bore into the capsules, feed on the seeds and make them hollow.

Management

  • Spray neem seed kernel extract (50 g/litre of water).
