Soft rot/ Rhizopus rot (Rhizopus stolonifer)
Symptoms
- This is a post harvest disease of sweet potato and cause reduction in quality of tubers
- Symptoms appear as water soaking followed by softening of tissues
- The rotten tissues emit a fermented smell
- Fluffy mycelium, sporangiophores and sporangia of the fungus emerge out from the affected tissues
Management
- Avoiding injuries to tubers during harvest and careful post harvest handling to prevent infection.
- Storage in deep pits with alternate layer of leaves, sawdust and soil is effective.
- Dipping seed tubers in mancozeb or copper oxychloride 0.2% can arrest the disease development.
