Carrot (Daucus carota)

Black rot (Alternaria radicina)

Symptoms

  • The seed and soil-borne disease is characterized by a shiny black decay at the crown area and a greenish-black mold on the tap root.
  • The infected tissue is greenish black to jet black due to the presence of masses of black spores.
  • The disease affects the roots in the field as well in storage.

Management

  • Proper field sanitation and practicing rotation helps to keep the disease under control.
  • Store carrots at 0oC and 95 percent humidity, and ensure that there is no moisture on their surfaces.
