Symptoms
- Feed on leaves and fresh growth.
- Young caterpillars bite holes on leaves
- Older larvae defoliate entire foliage
Management
- Clean cultivation to expose the larvae to natural enemies
- Pheromone traps to predict egg laying.
- Hand picking and destruction of egg masses and early gregarious instars.
- Plough the soil to expose and kill the pupae
- Grow castor along border and irrigation channel as trap crop
- Flood the field to drive out the hibernating larvae
- Set up light trap @1/ha
- Spray of neem seed kernel extract @ 4.0 per cent at early growth stage of the crop.
- Spray of SlNPV @ 250 LE per hectare
- Natural enemies like Bracon sp, Telenomus sp , Bt and entomopathogenic fungi
