White grub (Brahmina coriacea, Holotrichia longipennis, Melolontha sp., Lachnosterna longipennis and L. coracea)
Symptoms
- Initially, the grubs feed on rootlets and roots before moving on to tubers.
- The first-stage grubs consume live roots, while the second and third instar grubs create large, shallow, circular holes in the tuber.
- White grubs feed concealed, they often go unnoticed, and at harvest, a significant number of tubers are found to be infested or damaged.
Management
- Collection and destruction of grubs while ploughing.
- Flooding of the fields, for 7-10 days
- Apply well rotten FYM helps in controlling the pest.
- Seed potatoes should be planted little deep (8-10 cm) instead of normal depth (6 cm).
- Potato crop should be harvested immediately after required maturity i.e. by September.
- Apply neem cake in the field.
