General Information

The term forage crops denotes plants used for feeding livestock viz. cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry and horses. The term ‘grass’ in the context of feeding livestock and grassland agriculture is not limited to the narrow botanical sense alone, but also includes their common associates of the legume family. ‘Soiling crops’ are green forage crops that are cut and fed in fresh condition to the livestock.

Paddy straw which form bulk of the cattle roughage is a very poor feed. It needs to be supplemented with more nutritious feedstuffs. The fodder resources of our State can be improved by adopting better production techniques, introducing exotic types of high yielding and nutritious fodder varieties, developing grass land farming and companion farming of fodder to the extent possible and by carefully preserving surplus fodder.
