Early shoot borer (Chilo infuscatellus)
Symptoms
- The borer attacks young cane stalks, entering through holes and boring in upwards and downwards, causing the growing point to die and resulting in a dead heart emitting a foul odour
- Severe infestation can dry out the entire clump, reducing yield and quality.
Management
- Follow deep summer ploughing.
- Intercrop with green gram, black gram or dhaincha.
- Give light earthing up for the crop three months after planting.
- Use pheromone traps @ 4-5/acre for monitoring.
