Rice (Oryza sativa)

Presence of silver shoot in the place of central leaf is the prominent symptom.
The symptom appears from the nursery to the flowering stage.
In very young seedling instead of silver shoots a swelling at the basal portion and excess tillering are often noticed.
The attack results in formation of a hollow cavity or tubular goal like onion leaf at the base of the infested tiller.
Affected tiller inhibits growth of leaves and fails to produce panicles.
The leaves are seen deformed, wilted and rolled.
The adults are orange coloured mosquito like fly.

Use tolerant varieties like Pavithra, Panchami and Uma.
Avoid late transplantation during the first crop season.
Careful monitoring of the crop seasons in the month of July during additional crop season and October during puncha season.
Use optimum seed rate of 100 kg/ha.
Destruction of collateral host like wild rice, Cynodon dactylon, Ischaemum aristatum, Echinochloa spp. and Isachne sp.
