Rice Thrips( Stenchaetothrips biformis)

Symptoms

  • The crop is highly susceptible in the nursery stage for the first 23-25 days after transplanting/ sowing.
  • Both nymphs and adults lacerate the tender leaves and suck the plant sap. This cause yellow or silvery streak on the leaves of young seedlings.
  • Typical symptom of attack is the tips of leaves getting rolled longitudinally into needle like outgrowths and turned whitish. It causes damage both in nursery and main field.
  • The infestation may be rated as mild, if there is less than 3 needle like leaves and as severe, if there are more than 3 outgrowths with the lower leaves also showing chlorosis ans scorching.
  • The larvae is yellow in color and adults are dark brown in color.

Management

  • Flooding to submerge the infested field for two days is very effective
