Sesame (Sesamum indicum)

Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. sesami)

Symptoms

  • The plant can become infected at any stage of crop growth, with symptoms initially appearing on lower leaves and spreading upward.
  • Yellowing, drooping, and drying of leaves occur, with severe cases leading to complete defoliation, bending of the plant, and eventual drying up.
  • Vascular bundles starting from the roots turn brown, and extending to the tips of shoots.
  • Plants exhibit wilting and stem withering.

Management

  • Follow deep ploughing in summer.
  • Follow crop rotation.
  • Collect and destroy the infected crop debris and roguing of infected plants.
  • Use disease free seeds from the disease free area.
  • Treat the seed with Trichoderma viride (20 gram / kg of seed) or Pseudomonas fluorescens (20 gram / kg of seed).
