Lesser Yam (Dioscorea esculenta)
Tuber rot (Botryodiplodia theobromae)
Symptoms
- Disease can affect crops both in the field and during storage.
- During storage, tubers may develop wet rot, soft rot, or brown dry rot.
- Wet rot causes the tuber tissues to break down into a watery mass.
- Soft rot leads to softened tissues that turn pink in color.
- Tubers affected by dry rot become brown, dry, and turn into powdery brown residue.
Management
- Use disease free planting materials.
- Cut tubers should be dried properly.
- Planting materials should be dipped in wood ash before drying.
