• Less tolerant to drought & water logging.
• Shade tolerant crop.
• Tolerant of light shade, but increased shade leads to the death of aerial parts.

• Wide range of soils except hard clay or pure sands,
• Requires a deep well drained, fertile loamy soil
• Soil pH: 5.5 to 6.5
• Mean soil temperature: above 20°C.

Season

• Rainfed crop: February- March to November-December.
• Irrigated crop: Throughout the year.
