Amaranthus weevil (Hypolixus truncatulus)

Symptoms

  • Irregular zig-zag tunnels can be seen in the stem.
  • These tunnels will be filled with excreta.
  • Gall like thickening and longitudinal splitting of stem is also noticed.
  • The attack results in suppression of root and leaf production.

Management

  • Destroy wild amaranthus plants growing nearby.
  • Collect and destroy affected plant parts along with grubs and adults.
  • Set up light trap @1 /ha to attract and kill the adults.
  • Spray neem garlic emulsion (20 ml neem oil + 20 gram garlic paste+ 5 gram bar soap/litre of water).
