Aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae, Myzus persicae)

Symptoms

  • Yellowish green nymphs and adults suck cell sap and devitalize plants.
  • Affected parts become discolored and malformed.
  • Cupping and crinkling of leaves can be seen.
  • The aphids are mostly observed on the lower surface of the leaves.
  • When seedlings are infested they lose vigor, gets distorted and become unfit for transplanting.
  • Excrete honeydew which attracts sooty mould and interferes with photosynthesis.
  • Presence of white cast skin at the base of the plant
  • High humidity favours rapid multiplication of this pest.

Management

  • Grow mustard as trap crop.
  • To control wash off plants with a strong stream of water and reduce pest numbers.
  • Hang yellow sticky (castor oil coated) traps@ 20 no/ha.
  • Cut and destroy the infested leaves/ shoots mechanically as soon as the aphid attack appears.
  • Spray of fine pulverized mica powder @ 0.2 per cent to repel the alates
  • Spray Lecanicillium lecanii (synonym Verticillium lecanii) (20 g/litre of water) or Beauveria bassiana (20 g/litre of water).
  • Spray neem garlic emulsion (20 ml neem oil + 20 gram garlic paste + 5 gram bar soap/litre of water).
  • Predators like coccinellids, syrphids and chrysopids; and parasitoids like Aphidius spp also reduce the population.
