Cabbage borer (Hellula undalis)

Symptoms

  • The adult female lays eggs on the growing point or on the older leaves.
  • Caterpillars first mine into leaves and feed on the chlorophyll
  • Later on feed on the leaf surface sheltered within the silken passage.
  • The pale-whitish caterpillars mine the foliage, feed on the shoots and finally bore into the stem.
  • As a result the infested plants are killed or produce side shoots, which do not form heads.

Management

  • Monitoring of pest at seedling or early growth stage.
  • Collection and destruction of early stage caterpillars
  • Indian mustard as trap crop
  • Spray neem seed kernel extract (50 gram/litre of water).
  • Spray 20 gram bird pepper (kandari) extract in 1 litre cow's urine and 10 litre of water.
  • Spray tobacco decoction.
  • Spray Beauveria bassiana (20 g/litre of water).
