Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.)

Climate and Soil

  • Chilli thrives in hot weather but struggles to set fruit if night temperatures exceed 24°C.
  • The optimal daytime temperature for chilli growth is 20–30°C.
  • Growth and yield decline when temperatures drop below 15°C or rise above 32°C for prolonged periods.
  • Chilli plants are photoinsensitive; day length does not influence flowering or fruit set.
  • Well-drained loam or silt loam soils with good water-holding capacity are ideal for chilli cultivation.
  • Chilli can adapt to various soil types, provided they have proper drainage.
  • The recommended soil pH for chilli growth is 5.5 to 6.8.
