Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci)

Symptoms

  • Causes Chlorotic spots and yellowing by sucking cell sap from the leaves.
  • Downward curling and drying of leaves.
  • Severe infestation results in premature defoliation.
  • Sooty mould can be seen on the leaves.
  • They are the vectors of yellow vein mosaic virus.

Management

  • Field sanitation, roguing of affected plants
  • Place yellow sticky (castor oil coated) traps @ 20 no/ha.
  • Apply nitrogen fertilizers judiciously.
  • Protect the nursery by using nylon nets (200 mesh) for 25-30 days.
  • Spray Lecanicillium lecanii (synonym Verticillium lecanii) (20 g/litre of water).
  • Spray neem garlic emulsion (20 ml neem oil + 20 gram garlic paste + 5 gram bar soap/ litre of water).
