Damping off of seedlings (Pythium aphanidermatum, Pythium ultimum)

Symptoms

  • Pre-emergence damping off- Young seedlings are killed before they emerge through the soil surface. Seeds may rot or seedlings may be killed before breaking of hypocotyl. base of the seedlings are completely rotted
  • Post –emergent damping off- Toppling of infected seedlings occur after they emerge from the soil. Infected tissue appears soft and water-soaked.

Management

  • Nursery should be well drained
  • Soil solarised beds should be used for the planting of seedlings
  • Apply Trichoderma enriched cow dung
  • Seed treatment with Pseudomonas 2-5g/Kg seed
  • Rogue out the infested seedlings
  • Maiantain soil pH by adding lime/dolomite
