Red coffee borer (Zeuzera coffeae)

Symptoms

  • Mostly seen in new clearings as batches.
  • Young stems are bored and larvae tunnel downward, make holes at intervals to eject excreta and wood particles.
  • Frass and excreta are seen around plants.

Management

  • Selectively remove badly affected branches at the time of pruning.
  • Apply nitrogen and potassium at 1:2 ratio in the prune year and mid cycle.
  • Placing of partly dried cut stems of a jungle plant Montanoa bipinnatifida @400 ha attracts shot hole borer adults.
  • Spray Beauveria bassiana @ 20 g/l of water
