Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Slow wilt (C.O.: Plant parasitic nematodes like Radopholus similis and Meloidogyne incognita and fungi like Rhizoctonia bataticola, Fusarium spp. and Pythium spp.))

Symptoms

  • Characterized by foliar yellowing,die back of aerial stems,occasional tip burn symptoms,interveinal chlorosis
  • Foliar yellowing starts after north-east monsoon from october- november and reaches maximum during april-may coinciding summer

Management

  • Nematode free root cutting raised in fumigated nursery mixture should be used for fresh planting.
  • Remove the severely affected vines which are beyond recovery
  • Apply green mulch of Eupatorium odoratum @ 45 t/ha.
  • Use less susceptible live standards viz., Garuga pinnata,Erythrina indica
  • Powder of the friendly bacterium Bacillus macerans can be applied at the time of planting at the rate of 10 g per vine. It can be applied on the flagellum just before the monsoon to prevent nematode attack in the orchards.
  • Pochonia chlamydosporia is a very effective against root knot nematodes. 10 grams of powder should be mixed with 2 kg of finely ground dung or compost and added to the pepper base.
