Climate and Soil
Banana prefers tropical humid lowlands and is grown from the sea level to 1000 m
above MSL. It can also be grown at elevations up to 1200 m, but at higher elevations
growth is poor. Optimum temperature is 27ºC. Soils with good fertility and
assured supply of moisture are best suited. One of the serious limitations to banana
cultivation is high-velocity wind. When wind velocity exceeds 80 kmph it causes
damage to plantation by uprooting the plants. The damage is more severe when the
plants are laden with bunches.
Banana can be grown in almost all types of soils provided they have good water holding
capacity and are well drained. Ill drained and poorly aerated, nutritionally deficient
soils are not suitable for banana. The minimum soil depth necessary is about one
metre. Soils exceeding pH 8.0 are not suitable. Banana can grow well in slightly
alkaline soil, and in fact such soils are known to prevent incidence of banana wilt.
