Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis)
- A continuous supply of moisture is necessary for proper development of curds.
- Very shallow hoeing should be done at weekly intervals to remove weeds and better aeration of soil.
- Earth up the plant one month after transplanting.
Irrigation
- Adequate moisture is required during the growing and curding phase for even growth and proper curd development.
- First irrigation: Immediately after transplanting.
- Subsequent irrigations: Every 8-10 days, depending on season and soil conditions.
Weed Control
- Keep the field weed-free with 2-3 hand weedings.
- Perform 1-2 shallow hoeings to remove weeds and improve soil aeration without damaging roots.
Earthing Up
- Done one month after transplanting to promote large-sized curds.
- Supports plants with soil to prevent toppling during head formation.
Blanching
- Prevents curds from turning yellow and losing flavour due to direct sunlight.
- Cover curds with leaves for protection.
- Some self-blanching varieties naturally shield curds with inner whorls of leaves.
