Gall Midge ( Orseolia oryzae )
Symptoms

- Presence of silver shoot in the place of central leaf is the prominent symptom.
- The symptom appears from the nursery to the flowering stage.
- In very young seedling instead of silver shoots a swelling at the basal portion and excess tillering are often noticed.
- The attack results in formation of a hollow cavity or tubular goal like onion leaf at the base of the infested tiller.
- Affected tiller inhibits growth of leaves and fails to produce panicles.
- The leaves are seen deformed, wilted and rolled.
- The adults are orange coloured mosquito like fly.
Management
- Use tolerant varieties like Pavithra, Panchami and Uma.
- Avoid late transplantation during the first crop season.
- Careful monitoring of the crop seasons in the month of July during additional crop season and October during puncha season.
- Use optimum seed rate of 100 kg/ha.
- Destruction of collateral host like wild rice, Cynodon dactylon, Ischaemum aristatum, Echinochloa spp. and Isachne sp.
