ഉരുളക്കിഴങ്ങ്‌ (Solanum tuberosum)

Charcoal Rot(Macrophomina phaseolina)

Symptoms

  • The disease enters the tubers in the soil through swollen spots called lenticels and any cuts or scrapes.
  • Dark spots show up around these swollen spots and the eyes of the tuber. These spots get bigger and go deep into the flesh of the tuber.
  • The germ gets in through swollen spots, the eyes, the stems that grow off the tuber, and any cuts or scrapes made by larvae of the tuber moth. This causes sunken black spots and later, the inside of the tuber turns black.

Management

  • Harvesting the crop early before the soil temperature reaches 28oC can check the disease.
