Rose (Rosa rubiginosa)
Roses are originated in Europe & Middle East (Iran, Afganisthan, Turkey) and Damask rose as the name suggests has its origin from Damascus (capital of Syria). It is now widely cultivated in Bulgaria, Turkey, France, Italy, Morocco, Russia and India. In India, Uttar Pradesh is the leading producer and it is grown in Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh too. Rose is a perennial shrub growing up to 3 m height. Stem is characterized by prickles. It has got compound leaves with 5-7 leaflets. Inflorescence is corymb, 5-7 flowers having different colours – pink, red, white. The fruits are botanically called hips which are rich in Vitamin C.
