Tapioca (Manihot esculenta)
Climate
- Warm humid tropical climate with well distributed and fairly abundant rainfall
- Can withstand fairly prolonged periods of drought
- Sufficient moisture is needed at the time of planting
- Can’t withstand cold and is killed by frost
Soil
- Well-drained laterite, gravelly and sandy loam soils
- Heavy and rocky soils less suitable
- Tapioca grows well in the most common limestone soils in Kerala, the sandy soils in the coastal areas, and the clay soils found in the Thiruvananthapuram district.
- Crop can’t survive in waterlogged conditions
- Hill slopes with precautions
- Wastelands of low fertility
- It is not advisable to grow it in the same area continuously as it is a crop that removes a lot of nutrients from the soil.
