Tapioca (Manihot esculenta)

Climate

  • Warm humid tropical climate with well distributed and fairly abundant rainfall
  • Can withstand fairly prolonged periods of drought
  • Sufficient moisture is needed at the time of planting
  • Can’t withstand cold and is killed by frost

Soil

  • Well-drained laterite, gravelly and sandy loam soils
  • Heavy and rocky soils less suitable
  • Tapioca grows well in the most common limestone soils in Kerala, the sandy soils in the coastal areas, and the clay soils found in the Thiruvananthapuram district.
  • Crop can’t survive in waterlogged conditions
  • Hill slopes with precautions
  • Wastelands of low fertility
  • It is not advisable to grow it in the same area continuously as it is a crop that removes a lot of nutrients from the soil.

  • Main planting season April-May (with the onset of south-west monsoon) September-October (with the onset of north-east monsoon)
  • Irrigated planting February -April
  • Best planting season April- May (Can utilize both monsoons) September- October (Second best season)
