Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci, Aleurodicus disperses)
Symptoms
- Yellowish speckling and crinkling and curling of leaves are the primary symptoms of the attack.
- The pest attacks the mature leaves more compared to younger ones.
- The infested leaf slowly shows irregular yellowing and premature defoliation.
- The attack is mainly noticed in dry periods from November to April.
- Development of sooty mould.
- Vector of cassava mosaic virus.
Management
- Remove weeds in the field.
- Install yellow sticky trap at 12 no/ha.
- Avoid over use of nitrogen fertilizers.
- Avoid excessive irrigation.
- Spray Neem oil (30 ml/litre of water) or Fish oil rosin soap (25 mg/litre of water). While using neem oil, teepol should be added at 1 ml/litre of water for better contact with foliage.
- Spray Lecanicillium lecanii (synonym Verticillium lecanii) (20 g/litre of water).
