Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci, Aleurodicus disperses)

Symptoms

  • Yellowish speckling and crinkling and curling of leaves are the primary symptoms of the attack.
  • The pest attacks the mature leaves more compared to younger ones.
  • The infested leaf slowly shows irregular yellowing and premature defoliation.
  • The attack is mainly noticed in dry periods from November to April.
  • Development of sooty mould.
  • Vector of cassava mosaic virus.

Management

  • Remove weeds in the field.
  • Install yellow sticky trap at 12 no/ha.
  • Avoid over use of nitrogen fertilizers.
  • Avoid excessive irrigation.
  • Spray Neem oil (30 ml/litre of water) or Fish oil rosin soap (25 mg/litre of water). While using neem oil, teepol should be added at 1 ml/litre of water for better contact with foliage.
  • Spray Lecanicillium lecanii (synonym Verticillium lecanii) (20 g/litre of water).
